Tornado warning for parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania canceled as severe weather hits Philadelphia region

A tornado warning for parts of New Castle County in Delaware and Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania has been canceled, the National Weather Service said.

The warnings and watches come as the heat is on in the Philadelphia region. Summer arrives Friday, but we're already feeling it here in the Philadelphia area, starting today and lasting for the next seven days.

This afternoon, storms are expected to develop, with some likely to be severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed our entire area in an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) of severe weather. A  has been issued for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware until 9 p.m.

Storm damage was reported in Lower Merion and Westtown due to the severe storms, and our cameras saw multiple trees down in North Philadelphia.

On Thursday, you need to hydrate often with non-alcoholic and non-sugary beverages. Make sure to dress in loose-fitting clothes and spend time in air conditioning if possible. Skies will be partly cloudy, with highs in the low 90s and a heat index near 100.

Not everyone will see a storm, but if you are in their path, the main threats will be damaging winds, downpours, hail 1 inch or larger, isolated tornadoes and intense lightning.

Most of the Philadelphia region is under an "enhanced" storm risk, or level 3 out of 5, and the rest of the area is under a level 2 or "slight" risk.

Due to the likelihood of severe storms, a NEXT Weather Alert is in place today.

Ironically, Friday, the summer solstice and official start to summer, will hover in the mid-80s with sunny skies and will be the nicest day of the next seven days.

Our first heat wave of the year arrives Saturday through the middle of next week.  As a reminder, three consecutive days at or above 90 is considered a heat wave.

Weekend forecast
Weekend forecast CBS Philadelphia

Skies will be partly sunny to sunny, with each day hotter and more humid than the day before. By Sunday, we are looking at dangerous heat with highs in the mid-90s and overnight lows near 80. Monday and Tuesday climb between 97 and 101 with a heat index, feels-like temperature between 101 and 107. At those temperatures, heatstroke and heat exhaustion are possible.

Due to the high heat and humidity, there is a chance of isolated thunderstorms each afternoon.

For some context:

  • Last year's first heat wave ran from June 18-23, and the last one hit at the end of July.
  • Both topped out at 98 degrees.
  • Our last 100-plus degree day? July 7, 2012, when we hit 101.
  • And the longest heat wave on record? A whopping 12 days back in 1901, including two scorchers over 100.

Because of the dangerous heat, a NEXT Weather Alert is in place from Monday to Wednesday.
