Philadelphia residents, businesses preparing for upcoming heat wave across Delaware Valley
The Philadelphia area is days away from a heat wave. Temperatures could soar into the triple digits. While the heat wave is set to start over the weekend, a Fairmount business is getting ready now.
"We got 12-inch high-voltage fans. We got the regular circular standup fans," Steven Emerson, an assistant general manager in training at ACE Hardware on Fairmount, explained.
From fans to air conditioners, the shelves are full at the hardware store.
Emerson said Wednesday is truck day, and the store is stocking up with the heat wave in mind.
They are expecting an influx of customers over the next few days and to sell out of some of these items by the weekend.
"(The store will be) busy because of the weather. I'm expecting a huge sell in air conditioners and cooling equipment," Emerson said.
He continued, "We had to double up on the fans because we ran out two weeks in a row."
That was before summer officially began. Emerson's advice to customers: Come early before the temperatures soar.
Philadelphia gets a taste of summer ahead of heat wave
Philadelphia got a taste of some summer heat on Wednesday, but the mid-week warmup was also met with some rain.
CBS News Philadelphia stopped by "The Oval" at Eakins Oval along the parkway.
It's a summer-long pop-up filled with vendors and a beer garden, along with other activities and performances throughout the season. It's one big block party in the city.
Some FIFA Club World Cup fans made a stop. It was their first time in Philly and they said they are making the best of it, rain or shine.
"I am an Eagles fan all the way from Brazil," Raffaele Lusifero said.
The Oval will be open Wednesday through Sunday all summer long until September.
Many people are excited to get the summer started. The warm weather and the outdoor events are something they have been looking forward to.
Libertee Grounds, along 16th Street and Girard Avenue, runs the beer garden at The Oval. They said it's their second year and have a mini golf course coming.
"We love our partnership with Parks and Rec and the City of Philadelphia," Pri Rambhia, co-Founder of Libertee Grounds, said. "Especially around here because you have a mix of both tourists and you have locals. People just want to be outdoors."
