Child among 2 people injured in Philadelphia by fallen trees amid severe weather
Two people were injured in Philadelphia due to fallen trees as severe storms hit the region on Thursday.
A child was injured after they were trapped under a tree in Philadelphia's East Oak Lane neighborhood.
The tree fell in the area of the 6400 block of North 11th Street at around 5:45 p.m.
The child was rescued and taken to Einstein Medical Center. Their condition isn't known at this time.
Prince Novles, who lives near where the tree fell, said he was inside his home with his mother as the storms blanketed the city and the surrounding suburbs. As he was closing the windows inside the house, Novles said he heard the tree fall and ran outside.
Novles said it was "chaos" on the street as some of his neighbors headed to where the tree fell in the backyard of the home.
"When it rolled through, the whole reason I went upstairs is because I saw rain spinning like it was a tornado or something like that," Novles said. "I haven't seen winds spinning like that since the last time we had a hurricane up here."
Novles said three trees fell on his street, including one that landed in the driveway of a home of a woman in her 90s. He said they're working to clear that out of her driveway now and cleaning up the rest of the debris left behind.
"We just trying to be good, positive members of the community right now," he said.
Hours later, in Philadelphia's Overbrook section, a person was trapped inside a vehicle after a tree fell on it at around 9 p.m., according to fire dispatch. It happened on City Avenue near Haverford Avenue. The person was taken to Lankenau Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Earlier Thursday, a tornado warning was briefly in effect for parts of New Castle County in Delaware and Chester and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania, but that was canceled.
A thunderstorm watch for the Philadelphia region ended just before 9 p.m.
