An altercation at a Miramar apartment complex led to gunfire and a carjacking at a nearby Aldi on Saturday afternoon, police said.

According to the preliminary investigation by Miramar police, an altercation happened at the nearby Epic Residences on Miramar Parkway off Flamingo Road that escalated into a shooting, where 20 rounds were fired.

During a press briefing, Miramar Police Public Information Officer Janice McIntosh told reporters that one of the suspects then ran into the Aldi, on 12255 Miramar Parkway, and forcibly took a woman's vehicle, fleeing the area.

The police pursuit was "very brief," McIntosh said, adding that the suspect then bailed from the vehicle before getting apprehended by responding officers and was taken into custody.

Miramar Police said two people were shot outside of the Aldi and taken to the hospital. McIntosh said it is unclear whether the shooting victims were bystanders or involved in the altercation.

McIntosh said one of the victims took themselves to the hospital. One of the victims was shot in the arm, but McIntosh said she did not know what condition the other victim was in.

McIntosh also said two other suspects remain at large.

A perimeter was established, and a command post was set up at 12280 Miramar Pkwy.

When the scene spilled into the Aldi, shoppers were stuck inside as police came, but have since been released. McIntosh said that the situation should not be an issue for the community at this time.

"One of the things that the Miramar Police Department wants to do is ensure that the public is safe," she said. And so even though the entire perimeter is not affected, it was only by the apartments and [Aldi]. We want to make sure they expand the perimeter so there's no other casualties in the area."

Witness shows bullet holes in his living room wall

CBS News Miami spoke with witnesses to the entire incident, who expressed fear and shock at what had happened near their homes.

Jannea Wolff watched officers surround her apartment complex and hadn't heard from her children who were at home.

"I don't exactly know what happened, but it is very concerning given that this is a safe neighborhood," she said. "I didn't know something like this would be happening."

Meanwhile, Felipe Larramende said he was standing outside with his son when everything happened.

"They start shooting and I see the bullets pass by me. As soon as I pick up my son, I put him under me and I start running," he told CBS News Miami. "When I started running, my wife came out from the other door and grabbed my son. That's when she told me your sister is in Aldi. So I went to Aldi to go pick up my sister."

"As I'm running to the Aldi, I make face-to-face with the other shooter," he added. "Yeah, we made eye contact and I think he didn't care about me or something, and he let me pass."

Larramende returned home to find a bullet from the shooting that went through the sliding glass door of his balcony.

"It would [have] killed my mom because she was in the kitchen," he told CBS News Miami. "But the bullet broke and hit the wall right there."

Now, Larramende has four holes in his living room wall from bullet fragments.

Miramar Police said the scene remains active. McIntosh added that the Broward County Sheriff's Office and K9 units are assisting in the investigation.
