Broward deputy shoots man after getting punched in face during West Park incident, sheriff's office says
A man and a Broward County Sheriff's deputy were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after the man punched the officer in the face and the officer shot him in response, according to the sheriff's office.
Around 12:30 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a 911 call reporting a "suspicious incident" involving a weapon near 4000 SW 26th St. in West Park, prompting deputies to respond, BSO public information officer Carey Codd told reporters.
During the response, a man punched a deputy in the face, prompting the deputy to fire their weapon in response to the "ongoing threat," Codd said.
The man was injured and taken to the hospital. Codd said the deputy was also hospitalized, but is expected to recover.
Codd told reporters that details about whether the incident happened inside or outside the home, and whether the man actually had a weapon at the time, remain unclear and are part of the ongoing investigation.
"At this point, the investigation is still very active and very fluid," he said.
Codd said that the deputy involved has been assigned to an administrative assignment, which is standard procedure for BSO.
Neighbors told CBS News Miami that they heard multiple gunshots when it happened.
"I could've been in the back yard or got hit, my wife or somebody," said Johnnie Robinson.
Robinson lives right behind the home where the shooting happened, and said both he and his wife heard rapid gunfire.
"Bow, bow, bow, bow, bow, bow, bow," he described. "She said that sounded like fireworks, and I said, 'No baby, somebody shooting out there.'"
Multiple agencies are investigating the incident: BSO's Homicide and Crime Scene Units are investigating the events leading up to the incident; BSO's Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review; and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the shooting investigation.
