Power lines down, outages reported as storms hit Southeast Michigan on Tuesday

Officials in Metro Detroit reported downed power lines and outages as storms invaded Southeast Michigan Tuesday afternoon.

According to DTE Energy,  were without power as of 11 p.m. Meanwhile, Consumers Energy said more than  are impacted. Those numbers had improved by 6 a.m. Wednesday with 11,800 DTE customers still without power. DTE estimates that 95% of the affected customers will have their power restored by end of day Wednesday. Consumers had no active power outages for southeast Michigan on its map by Wednesday morning.

In Farmington Hills, officials say a downed line closed the westbound Grand River entrance at M-5. Drivers are diverted to WB Grand River. Additionally, eastbound M-5 is reduced to one lane at Orchard Lake Road. 

Other downed lines were reported in Clinton Township, which also reported downed trees in the area of Garfield and 16 Mile Road. Meanwhile, the storms brought down trees on Palmer Street, causing power outages.

"All we saw was just rain coming down, everything the trees were wooshing, it was really scary, but by the time we got out, everything was over, and we just saw this, and it was really insane," said Lilliana.

Residents in a Clinton Township home say their roof was destroyed in Tuesday's storms.

"I called my wife and let her know that the house was in the neighbor's yard," said William Litwaitis. "We don't have a roof ... It's raining inside of our house because it's like a big bowl.

Litwaitis added, "The funny thing was yesterday (Monday) was our 25th wedding anniversary, but hey, everybody is safe. That's the only thing that matters."

Berkley city officials reported a downed line on Cumberland Road, which is impacting the area of Cumberland and Cornwell Street. In Wixom, officials say the storm took down power lines on the Michigan Air Line Trail. The section will be closed to allow DTE to address it.

The Michigan Department of Transportation also issued several notices of flooded roads, including a section of M-39 near Grand River and a section of I-75 near 7 Mile Road.

Warnings and watches issued in Southeast Michigan

The following watches and warnings were issued on Tuesday, June 24.

  • Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Genesee, Oakland and Lapeer counties until 4:15 p.m. That warning has been lifted.
  • Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Lenawee and Washtenaw counties until 5:45 p.m. That warning has been lifted.
  • Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Tuscola and Lapeer counties until 7:45 p.m. That warning has been lifted.
