Fire under investigation at former St. Agnes church, rectory in Detroit
A fire started at the former St. Agnes church and rectory Monday in the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Bethune street in Detroit.
Detroit Fire Department responded to the scene and the cause is under investigation.
There was significant damage to the church building. The rectory building next door is a total loss.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit said it sold the property in 2009, and Michael Rivait is the current owner.
"We are deeply saddened by the fire that occurred last night at the historic St. Agnes Church campus. We are incredibly grateful to the Detroit Fire Department for their swift and courageous response, which prevented even greater loss," Rivait said in response to the fire.
"As the investigation continues, we remain steadfast in our commitment to honoring the legacy of this sacred site. Just as we did with 1800 and 1732 W. Bethune St. Detroit and Elaine Lofts at 5918 St. Antoine St. Detroit. We believe in Detroit's future and in preserving the architectural and cultural fabric of this great city! We will do all we can to salvage and redevelop the site to benefit the surrounding community through thoughtful housing and commercial opportunities."
