ICE agents in San Jose call police due to protester presence at operation
San Jose Police confirmed there were ICE agents in the city on Tuesday afternoon conducting an operation, and in a statement, ICE confirmed they were in the city on Wednesday, as well.
The agents were conducting an operation near Snell Avenue and Blossom Hill Road on Tuesday, police said. During the operation, ICE agents contacted the San Jose Police and told them they needed assistance due to protesters yelling.
San Jose Police said a lieutenant was sent to make sure that no other crimes were occurring and to remind them that they do not get involved in immigration enforcement.
Video shows what appears to be ICE agents on Blossom Hill Road. According to their post, the agents were there sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Police said no crimes occurred, and the lieutenant left the scene not long after. Police have not said how many protesters were in the area.
KPIX reached out to ICE about their presence on Tuesday and Wednesday in San Jose.
"Those arrested had executable final orders of removal by an immigration judge and had not complied with that order," an ICE spokesperson said.
The city of San Jose also issued a statement on Wednesday about ICE's activity in the city.
"We've heard reports of ICE activity in South San José. While we don't have details about the operation, I want to be clear that our police department does not carry out federal immigration enforcement, and I'll reiterate my call for the Federal Government to focus on serious and violent criminals, not people who are contributing members of our community," said Mayor Matt Mahan. "Everyone should feel confident interacting with SJPD, which is important, because we are all safer when everyone participates in public safety."
