Uber driver dead after fiery crash under I-95 overpass in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood
An Uber driver died after a fiery car crash in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood Saturday night, police said.
The crash happened just after 9 p.m. on the 1000 block of Marlborough Street, under the Interstate 95 overpass. Police said the Uber driver had been driving four passengers from a nearby concert venue in a white Hyundai Kona when they experienced a medical emergency, lost control of the vehicle and hit three unoccupied parked cars underneath the highway.
According to the police, the Hyundai then burst into flames.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered multiple cars were on fire. The body of the driver was found inside the vehicle as firefighters put out the flames, officials said. Medics pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
Police have yet to provide a name for the driver, but said in an update on Sunday that he was a 31-year-old man.
All four passengers were able to escape the car. Pace said only one of the passengers suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Police then said on Sunday afternoon that none of the four passengers were injured.
Pete Moody, who lives around the corner from where the crash happened, said he was watching TV with his wife when he saw police lights and went outside to see what was going on.
"The blaze was probably halfway to the bridge," Moody said. "We were concerned, is this going to be another 95 overpass issue?"
Police said I-95 sustained no structural damage and is operating normally.
