Body of man recovered after boat tipped over on Schuylkill River in Pottstown, Pennsylvania
A missing man's body was recovered Monday after his boat tipped over while on the Schuylkill River in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Sunday night, officials said.
A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Montgomery County confirmed a body was recovered in the Schuylkill River just before 12:15 p.m. on Monday.
"Officials are in the process of notifying the family. The search has been concluded," a Montgomery County spokesperson said.
PFBC will oversee the investigation and provide a preliminary report on the boating incident by the end of this week.
Crews were called to the 900 block of Industrial Highway near the Keim Street Bridge just before 9 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of people in distress.
According to Chester County dispatch, a boat with two people inside tipped over, and one person was able to make it to shore.
Sources told CBS News Philadelphia that the missing man was in his 20s and had gone underwater but didn't resurface.
Montgomery County officials told CBS News Philadelphia that first responders searched the same area Monday morning.
It's unclear at this time what kind of boat the two people were in or where the body was exactly located in the river.
"We get one or two drownings a year somewhere along the length of the river. A little early in the season, but you know the boaters are out, so I wasn't completely shocked," said Nick Viscardi, a Pottstown resident. "I feel bad for, you know, the passing and his family."
Teams from both Montgomery and Chester counties, along with Pennsylvania State Police, combed the river until about 2:30 a.m. Monday before suspending their search for the night. They resumed on Monday morning.
The Montgomery County Coroner's Office will oversee the release of the man's identity. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
