2, including toddler, pulled from burning vehicle in St. Paul; officials say driver arrested
The Minnesota State Patrol says an investigation is underway after two people, including a toddler, were pulled from a burning vehicle in St. Paul.
According to the state patrol, troopers responded to the vehicle fire on eastbound Interstate 94 and Snelling Avenue at 8:15 p.m.
The patrol says fire crews pulled a male driver and a 3-year-old from the burning vehicle. There were no injuries from the fire.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and needed hospitalization, according to the patrol.
Deputy Chief Glen Jenkins with St. Paul fire said firefighters sprung into action.
"One of the firefighters noticed an unconscious male in the front seat," Jenkins said. "He called to his partner to come help pull the male out, that's when they noticed the toddler in the back seat."
Because of the firefighters' quick thinking, neither the man or his child were hurt.
"A fire doubles in size every 30 seconds, so in a situation like this, you have to move quick, you have to move fast," Jenkins said.
If his crews arrived anytime later, Jenkins said the outcome would have been very different.
"You're not looking at something that would have been survivable five minutes later," he said. "I just want to say what an amazing job these guys did on acting quick on something that just pops up, like that isn't an everyday thing."
"This investigation is open and is actively being investigated," the patrol said.
