A man is dead after what authorities are calling a "use-of-force incident" in central Minnesota Monday night.

The Paynesville Police Department said "shots were fired" when officers tried to arrest the man on suspicion of domestic assault. Police did not say who fired the shots, but the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension earlier said it was investigating law enforcement's use of force in Paynesville.

Paynesville officers responded to a reported domestic dispute on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue just after 9 p.m. They were told a man involved in the dispute had a gun.

Officers got a woman out of the home safely, finding minor injuries to her head and neck. She said the man assaulted her.

Police learned the man was locked in the basement and tried to coax him out before informing him of his arrest.

"As officers were trying to take the male into custody for domestic assault, shots were fired," the Paynesville Police Department said.

He died at the scene. Officers found a gun at the scene, but the department made no mention of it being fired or brandished, nor did it mention any injuries to officers.

Officers had their body cameras recording at the time, the department said. The BCA will continue to investigate.

Paynesville is about 85 miles northwest of Minneapolis, between Willmar and St. Cloud.
