Costa Mesa police are searching for a suspect after finding a 20-year-old nurse suffering from several gunshot wounds on the sidewalk late Monday night.

Around 11:10 p.m., police responded to an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Lukup Lane and found the wounded Huntington Beach woman. Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue transported the woman to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Coworkers of the victim identified her as home healthcare nurse Monserrat Colorado. They said she was waiting for a ride from her stepfather when she was shot to death.

"She was a nice girl she didn't deserve that," coworker Fiona DuBois said.

Investigators do not believe it was a random shooting. It appears the victim and the suspect knew each other, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.

"We don't have a suspect description to give the community at this time, but we do understand through the investigation that the victim and the suspect are known to each other," spokesperson Roxi Fyad said. "We are currently just investigating anything we can about this incident and that's all we really have at this time."

Friends brought flowers and food to Colorado's apartment where she lived with her mom, stepdad and young siblings. Dolores Saldana said she helped Colorado get the nursing job. Colorado dated her son in the past.

"I was close to her," Saldana said. "We're very close. I just feel for her mother."

Anyone with information regarding this active investigation can call Detective Stocking at (714) 754-5392 or Sergeant Jacobi at (714) 754-5352.
