Student killed in vehicle collision at Campbell Hall private school
Classes and final exams were canceled Thursday at Campbell Hall school, a day after a student died in a vehicle collision in the school's Studio City parking lot.
The collision happened just before 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Los Angeles Police Department said the 15-year-old student was walking between two cars in the pickup waiting zone when a Rivian drove forward and pinned him between the vehicles. The victim and his uninjured father were taken to a nearby hospital, where the teen later died.
The crash caused a chain reaction that forced other vehicles to collide. Firefighters treated five other victims, two minors and three adults, at the scene for minor injuries.
Detectives are trying to determine what caused the Rivian driver to move forward. However, they are considering the collision an accident and have not arrested anyone.
"This is a very tragic situation," LAFD Capt. Adam Vangerpen said. "This is hard on all the witnesses who witnessed this. There's a lot of kids getting out of school and getting ready for summer."
Campbell Hall students were in the midst of final exam week at the time of the crash.
Mayor Karen Bass said she will send a crisis response team to provide emotional support and recovery assistance to the school community affected by the accident.
The school's gymnasium will open on Thursday for those who want to grieve.
