Two people, including a 4-year-old, were killed and a third person was injured in a shooting Friday evening on Detroit's east side.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the shooting happened at Skinner Playfield near Morang Avenue and Duchess Street.

Police say the other deceased victim was described as 18 years old. The third victim, a 17-year-old, was taken to the hospital.

Police Chief Todd Bettison says two people were taken into custody as persons of interest. Bettison says the case is specifically hard because of the age of the youngest victim.

"This one right here, particularly, gets to me. Very, very disturbed by this," he said.

Bettison says the area is under the city's Community Violence Intervention (CVI) initiative, where a community organization is assigned to specific neighborhoods to help reduce violent crimes. Bettison says people overseeing the area are working to ensure a retaliatory incident does not happen.

"When you have something like this, you have the potential for retaliation, and so we're going to work to make sure that we ... further deconflict so that no further life is lost," he said.

The shooting is under investigation.

Note: Detroit police incorrectly stated that the third victim had died. The victim is still alive.
