Lansing-area teen dead, another injured, after a power line electrocution incident
A 14-year-old boy is dead, and a 15-year-old boy is hospitalized after a power line electrocution incident near Lansing, Michigan.
The accident happened Tuesday near an apartment building in Leslie, according to a report from Leslie Police Chief Evan Bennehoff. While the incident is still under investigation, officers learned "the boys touched the power line with a metal pole," the police chief said.
Police believe the 14-year-old boy touched one of the power lines off Worthington Place Drive, and that the 15-year-old boy received a shock as well while attempting to help the 14-year-old. The two teens were taken to an area hospital, where the 14-year-old died. The 15-year-old is expected to recover.
"Typically, with a patient that has been electrocuted, what level of dysrhythmia did it throw the heart into? That is one of the primary concerns," said Lansing Fire Chief Brian Sturdivant. "There's typically nothing we can do except become part of the problem."
A Consumers Energy spokesperson said that as a safety measure after the accident, the company cut off the electric circuit to the area, affecting service to 488 customers.
