Red Canyon Fire burns 10 acres in Colorado's Eagle County, closure of Interstate 70 lifted
Colorado transportation officials temporarily closed Interstate 70 west of Vail on Wednesday for several hours because of a wildfire. The Red Canyon Fire burned 10 acres in Eagle County.
At 5:15 p.m., soon after the fire started, a large number of vehicles could be seen backed up on I-70 in the area of the closure. Evacuations were ordered temporarily for areas around Red Canyon and Horn Ranch north of the interstate.
There were no reports of injuries.
The Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit provided an update Thursday morning, stating that crews worked overnight constructing and securing containment lines and performing mop-up operations. As of 10 a.m., the fire was 80% contained. Officials said they expect it to be fully contained by 6 p.m. Thursday.
The fire management unit advised the community that there may be smoke and torching throughout the day as crews work to put out the interior portions of the fire.
They said the right lane of westbound I-70 remains closed for the use of safety and emergency personnel working to contain the fire.
While Colorado's Front Range has been inundated with precipitation in recent weeks, that's not the story for most of Colorado's mountain areas. Eagle County is currently under moderate drought conditions, and red flag warnings are in effect for many areas of western Colorado.
