Police investigating after stolen car crashes near Evergreen Park shopping center; 1 dead
Police in the southwest Chicago suburb of Evergreen Park said one person died in a crash Tuesday morning when a stolen car plowed into another vehicle near the Evergreen Plaza shopping center.
As of 11:20 a.m., crews were working to reconstruct the two-car crash that was in the Walmart parking lot and on 95th Street, across from Evergreen Plaza.
A driver in a stolen car slammed into another vehicle while speeding and fleeing police. The driver of the stolen car is now dead, and police said the driver of the car that was struck is expected to recover.
The crash closing lanes of busy roadways for hours Tuesday.
CBS Skywatch was over the scene, where a dark gray car with severe front-end damage was against the median and sidewalk separating the parking lot from 95th Street. A light gray car with severe side impact and back-end damage was in the corner of the parking lot.
All this started when police got a notification from a camera system about a stolen vehicle at a Speedway gas station in Evergreen Park. Police said arriving officers saw a woman get out of the stolen car and go into the gas station, while a man sped away in the car.
The gas station would not share surveillance of the incident.
As officers patrolled 95th Street, they saw the stolen car speeding by. As they approached, they found the car had crashed into another vehicle at 95th Street and Campbell Avenue, police said.
The stolen car was going fast enough that it appeared to have sent the other car spinning into the Walmart parking lot, damaging or knocking over several trees in the process.
The driver of the stolen car was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said they are not identifying the man because they are still connecting with his family.
The driver of the car that was crashed into was transported to OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park for non-life threating injuries.
Police had lanes around the accident site closed for hours as they investigated, with the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team helping out.
The woman who was with the man driving the stolen car was taken into custody at the gas station. She will charged with criminal trespass, CBS News Chicago is told.
Police were not identifying that woman late Tuesday.
