A man died after a shootout with police who were responding to an armed robbery in southwest suburban Hickory Hills on Thursday night.

Around 8:45 p.m., police said officers responded to an armed robbery at a gas station at 95th Street and Roberts Road, when a man fired shots at the officers. Police said the officers then fired back, and the man ran into an alley.

Cell phone video shows the brief chase through the gas station parking lot.

Police said the armed man continued to shoot at officers in a nearby alley, and police returned fire.  Officers found him with a gunshot wound to the head. He later died at the hospital.

"It was in succession for sure. So it was just, dah dah dah dah dah, real quick," said witness Daniel Maldonado, who lives near the gas station and recorded video of the aftermath.

Maldonado heard the shots from his family's living room.

"We're right across from the gas station, so we have a direct view," he said. "It was definitely gunshots, because after that was happening, police were everywhere. ... We went out to our porch to see what was happening, and by then police were already on scene, and they were putting tape over the entire area."

Bullets did hit the windshield of a white SUV. Crime scene technicians were seen processing the car.

The white Range Rover was still at the scene Friday afternoon. The car's owners said they were not hurt.

Bullets also pierced the gas station's sign.

An officer was treated for minor injuries and has been released.

"Unfortunately, events like that, people could be hurt unintentionally, you know; but thankfully no one else was injured outside of that," Maldonado said. "I just hope that, in the future, humanity learns to try to take care of each other better. We need each other more than ever."

The shooting remains under investigation.
