First wave of weekend Mass Pike lane closures "successful," MassDOT says
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is calling the first wave of weekend lane closures on the Mass Pike "successful."
Traffic on both sides of the Pike in Newton and Weston was reduced to one lane from late Friday night to early Monday morning for part of a massive bridge replacement project.
MassDOT said the lane closures were lifted at 2:30 a.m. Monday in time for the morning rush hour.
The weekend lane closures brought traffic to a crawl and left many drivers frustrated, even though MassDOT had issued warnings several days in advance about the disruptions.
State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said drivers should expect a "normal Monday morning commute."
The next round of weekend lane closures begins on Friday, June 20, at 9 p.m. and will last until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 23.
Gulliver said drivers should plan to avoid the two-mile long stretch of the Pike on the Newton-Weston line, or plan ahead for alternate routes into Boston, such as Route 2. You can also get updates at .
The Mass Pike usually sees about 100,000 vehicles on an average weekend day.
